Hitohito Tadano is a first-year high school student who has no particular characteristics, average grades, and average athletic ability (or so he thinks). Tadano's life changes drastically when he enters high school.
He ends up sitting next to Shoko Komi, the school's Madonna, who receives everyone's admiration. However, Komi-san has a problem.
She wants to make friends, but she gets extremely nervous and can't speak when trying to talk to people. Tadano notices this and decides to help Komi-san achieve her dream of "making 100 friends."
Set in high school, the story sketches the daily lives of a group of one-of-a-kind characters with complexes, such as former school refusers, those with mysophobia, and those who sweat a lot, as they live their lives awkwardly but earnestly.
